This project explores an oft-overlooked feature of London’s urban vernacular: the many figurative architectural reliefs that adorn its buildings and monuments, artworks that reflect and shape the city’s unique character. In many ways, London itself is the protagonist. Unsurprisingly, the historical engines that have shaped the city are reflected in its plethora of architectural reliefs. These engage with a large variety of subjects, such as commerce and empire; social inequality and class; the tension between tradition and modernity; and the role of women in society.
